Effective use of Social Media by Local Government officials for Civic Engagement – A KAS/CEMCOD Partnership project

For the period 2016-2018, CEMCOD with Support by the Konrad Adeneur Stiftung (KAS) successfully implemented the project Social media for local governments which aimed at promoting the effective use of social media by local government leaders for civic engagement in Uganda. The project approach was Engagement, Capacity Building Training and Public Dialogues conducted at regional level. The main inputs were consultative visits to target local governments, trainings of selected District Local government technocrats and public dialogues held at regional level.

In total 40 districts were covered in 8 sub regions (Busoga, Elgon, Ankole, Lango, West Nile, greater Masaka, Bunyoro and Acholi) with 156 local government leaders trained; and 8 public dialogues conducted. The above regions represent 53% coverage of the country with Teso, Karamoja, Bukedi, Tooro, Buganda Central, Madi and Kampala Metropolitan being the others not covered by the project.

A project evaluation exercise conducted by CEMCOD together with KAS revealed enhanced civic engagement through digital platforms had been adopted by participating LGS following our intervention.
